Description:

UNION OFFICER WANTS TO KILL ROBERT E. LEE
A good war-date Union officer's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written, on "Office, Chief Quartermaster, Depot, City Point, Va.'" letterhead by Capt. Maurice Leyden, [POW Darbytown Road, Va., 10/07/64, confined Libby Prison & Salisbury, N. C.], 3rd New York Cav., May 7, 1865. In part: "…I am at Col. Bradley's…I have not found my regiment yet-too bad-what shall I do…I have been on the go…in search of my command. On my arrival at Annapolis I received orders…I went up to Petersburg…it was very hot and dusty. I passed over the same ground that…would not have been healthy…one year ago…I was somewhat disappointed in the appearance of Petersburg…there was not many…buildings injured. The city is full of 'gray backs'…most of them have learned to behave themselves. They are all very poor and have nothing to eat except…by our government…Gen. Lee drew rations every day for his family. A good idea to feed the man who has killed and starved…so many…of our poor men, d-d him I will sacrifice my own life to kill him-for the sake of my friends. I hope that I may never see the arch traitor…I sent you some rebel music…not for you to sing, but to let you see it…". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Near fine.
