Description:

UNION SOLDIER'S LETTER
A.L.S. of Union soldier John Thomas Louisville, Ky, Sept. 27, 1862, to his parents in Cincinnati, in pencil. He writes, in part: "...I suppose you have been looking for a letter from me for a month past, but all to no purpose as all communication has been cut off from us for six weeks past and all this time we have been on half Rations and sometimes none at all and all the time on the march which has been a very hard one...We got here yesterday about noon hungry, ragged, dirty and lousy a set a men as ever went soldiering. It has been three weeks since we had a change of clothes and there is no telling when we will have one as our Regimental Train is all behind with our knap sacks and cooking utensils...We are camped on the strip of ground between the river and canal and no body allowed to go in the town here...Bragg is reported to be within thirty miles of this place in force, I only hope it is so and that he has made up his mind to attack us immediately for I am tired of running after him...I have no idea how long we will stay here nor when we will go...P.S. Gen. Ammon commands our brigade, and Gen Smith, the Division...". With original envelope bearing embossed "Union and Constitution" seal on verso. Soiled yet very legible and overall very good condition.
