Description:

UNION SOLDIER SEEKS A FURLOUGH WHILE BEFORE PETERSBURG
Pair of war-date Union soldier's letters written by Pvt. Timothy O'Sullivan, 1st Connecticut Heavy Artillery, to Astoria, Connecticut, 2pp. "Front of Petersburg, VA, January 27, 1865", in part: "I wrote to you a few days ago about a pass…no one will get one unless they show it is a case of sickness and by you doing as I said to have Doctor Terry go and see my mother and himself write to me so I could show it. I think I could get a furlough on the strength of it…the furloughs are granted for only 15 days…"; the second letter, 3pp., is written "Front of Petersburg, VA, March 2, 1865", in part: "…We are expecting the paymaster every day. It is time he should come, we will be paid only for 4 months, although 6 months pay was due the last day of February… They say the pay master is drunk and does not attend to his business…I expect to send the priest a reasonable little sum...This is a disagreeable place when it rains…We are in the greatest hopes of this being the last summer of the war...". Very good.
