(Union Soldier's Diary) The Civil War diary of W. S. Hotchkin of Ist Regiment, N.Y. Engineers, about 12 pp., partly disbound, possibly written post-war. The diary covers the period Sep. 1 - Oct. 5, 1864 some good content including his company's vote for Lincoln, with a great description of the action around Petersburg. In part: crossed the James at Jones Landing... an awful sight... men with their heads and arms off, others with the blood running from wounds... one man with his arm torn into shreds... place was called Chapin's farm Fort Harrison was taken... whole Rebel line opened with shot and shell Rebs charged four times... eight thousand negroes stationed on the front. More fine content.
