Description:

(UNION NAVY) DISCHARGE CERTIFICATE FOR A USS MARATANZA GUNNER
A fine partly-printed D.S., 1p. 11.75 x 10 in., ‘Navy Yard Portsmouth', June 17, 1865, an honorable discharge certificate for an Albert S. Hyson, quarter gunner of the ‘double-ender' gunboat USS MARATANZA, enlisted at Baltimore on July 30, 1862. The certificate is illustrated at top with a fine engraving of a sidewheel steamer in profile, and is signed at the conclusion by the Maratanza's commander, GEORGE W. YOUNG (1841-1867), with her paymaster countersigning. The certificate shows an 1866 black ink stamp at center, with some mat burn to the edges and folds overall, and with some cello tape repairs to the verso, otherwise in very good condition overall. The USS MARATANZA was commissioned in April, 1862 under the command of later Rear Admiral Gustavus Scott, and operated on the York and James Rivers in support of McClellan's Peninsula Campaign. In July of 1862, she captured the gunboat CSS TEASER, which had served as a tender to the ironclad CSS VIRGINIA (ex-USS MERRIMAC). From September of 1862 to the end of the war, she was on blockade duty off the Carolina coast, capturing several blockade runners.
