(UNION NAVY) BUREAU OF ORDNANCE CHIEF HENRY A. WISE PURCHASES REMINGTON PISTOLS
HENRY A WISE (1813-1869) Career U.S. Navy officer, commanded the screw frigate USS NIAGARA and was tasked with destroying the Gosport Navy Yard to prevent its capture by Confederates. Lincoln appointed Wise chief of the Bureau of Ordnance in 1864. An interesting war-date manuscript L.S., 1p. 4to. Washington, D.C., July 3, 1863, to firearms manufacturer E. Remington and Sons. In full: ‘Enclosed please find approved triplicate bills for One hundred (100) Navy Pistols &c, amounting to twelve hundred dollars ($1200.00) and for which acknowledge receipt to this bureau.' He signs ‘H. A. Wise' in black ink at the conclusion as acting chief of the bureau. Shows original mailing folds, with scattered foxing and faint toning, otherwise in very good to fine condition.
