Good lot of three items signed by notable U.S. Army generals of the Civil War, includes: JOSEPH R. HAWLEY (1826-1905) Union general who later served as a congressman, senator and governor of Connecticut. A.L.S. as senator, 2pp. 4to., Washington, D.C., June 24, 1882, to Col. A.R. Boteler. In small part: "...I wrote a very friendly letter to the President, and told him the senators from your state would be friendly... I had little reason to think Camden might be hostile..." He signs at the conclusion in black ink. Shows original mailing folds, with a mounting strip at the top edge on the verso, else very good. WITH: SCHUYLER HAMILTON (1822-1903) Union major general who commanded a division at New Madrid and devised the digging of the channel to circumvent Island No. 10. A.L.S., 1p. 8vo., New York, Jan. 23, 1889, to fellow general JAMES G. WILSON, in part: "...my thanks for the Memorials and Footprints of Columbus...", also declining an offer to head a genealogical society. Shows slight toning and original mailing folds, with a mounting strip to the verso, else very good. WITH: RICHARD J. OGLESBY (1824-1899) Union major general who commanded a brigade at Forts Henry and Donelson, later wounded in the Battle of Corinth. A.L.S., 1p. 8vo., Decatur, Illinois, May 2, 1873, mentioning the 1870 census report and asking that it be sent to a third party. He signs at the conclusion in black ink.
