Description:

UNION GENERALS - SEVEN ENDORSEMENTS ON ONE DOCUMENT
Great war-date document bearing signed endorsements of seven Union generals, two being major figures repulsing Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg, another killed in action. The document is a manuscript L.S. of an unidentified major of the 19th Mass. Vols., 'Near Stevensburgh, Va.', Mar. 27, 1864 to the AAG of the 1st Brigade. The major states that a 'Captain Lysander Hume' had been AWOL for eight days, having presented a forged authorization from the Secretary of War to travel to Philadelphia. The endorsements appear on the verso and on both sides of the integral leaf, the first few endorsements forwarding the document, the last few returning it to Humes' commanding officer as Humes had indeed been legitimately sent to Philadelphia to serve on the staff of Major Gen. George Cadwalader. Those signing include, in chronological order: Brigadier Gen. SELDEN CONNOR (1839-1917), Colonel of the 19th Maine Infantry who, in January 1864, and was severely wounded in the Battle of the Wilderness. He was promoted to the rank of brigadier general of Volunteers on June 11, 1864 - an A.E.S.; Brig. Gen. ALEXANDER WEBB (1835-1911), held the 'Bloody Angle' against Pickett's charge at Gettysburg - an A.E.S.; Major Gen. WINFIELD SCOTT HANCOCK (1824 -1886), known to his Union colleagues as 'Hancock the Superb', he was noted in particular for his personal leadership at the Battle of Gettysburg - an E.S.; Major Gen. JOHN SEDGWICK (1813-1864), wounded at Antietam and Glendale, fought at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg, killed by a sharpshooter while claiming the Confederates would not be able to hit an elephant at such a distance - an E.S.; Major Gen. GEORGE CADWALADER (1806-1879), served as an advisor to Lincoln and Seward, and on various military boards - an A.E.S.; Brig. Gen. THOMAS M. VINCENT (1832-1909), an Indian-fighter and AAG - an E.S.; and Brig. Gen. SETH WILLIAMS (1922-1866), assistant adjutant general of the Union's Army of the Potomac who also delivered Grant's surrender terms to Lee. Scattered damp stains and some blurring, still overall very good.
