Description:

UNION GENERALS INNIS N. PALMER AND RICHARD H. JACKSON
Fine association pair of signed endorsements on the verso of a war-date letter, 2pp. 4to., New Berne, NC, Oct. 27, 1864, from a Maj. Floyd Clarkson to a Lt. Col. Smith, assistant adjutant general of the Department of Virginia and North Carolina, requesting thirty days' leave to attend to some business in New York in part: ‘...A few days after my application was made, but before I left this Post, I was taken sick with the epidemic that has prevailed here for some time past. I would respectfully tender my application for a leave of absence for Thirty days. I am now well, but feel that a change of climate would strengthen me, at the same time I would be able to attend to those interests that require my presence in New York.' The verso bears the signed endorsement of Brig Gen. INNIS N. PALMER (1824–1900), Union brigadier general who commanded a brigade under Keyes at Malvern Hill and led the 18th Corps towards the end of the war. He signs ‘I N Palmer' in black ink on a slip of paper pasted to the document, approving the request. A further endorsement forwards the request to Lt. Col. (later Brigadier General of volunteers RICHARD H. JACKSON (1830–1892), Union brigadier general who saw action at the Siege of Charleston and along the Richmond-Petersburg front during the last year of the war. He pens a lengthy A.E.S., in full: ‘Asst. Insp. Genl's Office, Hd. Qu. Dept. of Va & N.C. I have not, up to the present time, received the monthly Inspection Report for October of the District of N.C. If Major Clarkson has rendered the report of the Sub-District to the District Inspectors, I respectfully request that his application be granted.' He signs ‘R. H. Jackson' in black ink at the conclusion, adding his contemporary rank ‘Lt. Col. & A. I. Genl.' The document shows original mailing folds, with a 3 in. split between the two sheets of the letter, else in very good condition.
