Description:

UNION GENERALS HIRAM G. BERRY AND GERSHOM MOTT
Fine association group of A.E.S.'s on the verso of an interesting war-date partly-printed D.S., 1p. 4to., Falmouth, VA, March [n.d.], 1863, a furlough certificate granting leave to a Pvt. Peter B. Sicker of the 2nd New York Volunteers, signed at the conclusion by his company captain, Joseph J. Hagen. The verso first bears an A.E.S. of the regiment's commander, Col. [later Bvt. Brig. Gen.] SIDNEY W. PARK (1827-1902), forwarding the request. It is next endorsed by GERSHOM MOTT (1822 – 1884), a Union major general wounded at Second Manassas and Chancellorsville, also active in the Crater assault, who writes ‘Approved' and signs ‘G. Mott', with his rank added by another hand. The request is next forwarded to HIRAM G. BERRY (1824–1863), a Union General who served at First Bull Run, Fair Oaks and the Seven Days, and was killed while leading a bayonet charge at Chancellorsville. He endorses the request ‘App[roved]' and signs ‘H G Berry', with his rank added by another hand. The document next bears a lengthy A.E.S. by ORSON H. HART (1832-1872), later a Brevet Brigadier General, as assistant adjutant general to Maj. Gen Daniel Sickles, in full: ‘Respectfully returned No furloughs will be hereafter granted except those that show that the record of the applicant is good. By Command of Major Genl. Sickles', signing as ‘O. H. Hart'. Three other field officers add their own endorsements, forwarding the document back down the chain of command. Shows expected folds with minor splits thereto, with some toning to the endorsed verso, otherwise in very good condition. After Berry was killed by a sharpshooter's bullet at Chancellorsville, Mott assumed command of his division, but was himself badly wounded.
