Description:

UNION GENERALS ELLIOTT W. RICE AND JOHN M. CORSE
A fine association pair of signed endorsements on a manuscript letter, 1p. 4to., Ridgeway, KY, June 20, 1865, from a Lt. Harvey W. King of the 12th Illinois Volunteers to his commanding lieutenant colonel, requesting 30 days' leave to visit friends and attend to business in Illinois. On the verso first appears an endorsement from another lieutenant colonel commanding the regiment, noting that King has never had a leave of absence. Next appears the signed endorsement of ELLIOTT W. RICE (1835-1887), Union brigadier general who saw action at Forts Henry and Donelson, Corinth and Shiloh, before commanded a brigade during the Atlanta Campaign and fighting at Resaca, New Hope Church and Kennesaw Mountain. He signs ‘E W Rice' in black ink, with his rank added below in another hand, approving and forwarding the request. The request is finally endorsed by JOHN M. CORSE (1835 – 1893), Union brigadier general who was wounded at Missionary Ridge and also fought with Sherman in the March to the Sea and in the Carolinas. He signs ‘Jno. M. Corse' in black ink, with his rank added below in another hand, approving and forwarding the request. Shows original mailing folds with very faint toning to the endorsement page, otherwise in fine condition overall.
