Description:

UNION GENERALS JOHN MCARTHUR AND WILLIAM L. MCMILLEN
Fine association set of signed endorsements on a partly-printed document, 1p. 4to., Enterprise, MS, July 5, 1865, a discharge certificate for a Pvt. George Simpson Sr. of the 85th Ohio Volunteers, by reason of ‘hemorrhoids and chronic ulcers'. On the verso appears the A.E.S. of the lieutenant colonel commanding the regiment and Brevet Brigadier General JEFFERSON BRUMBACK (1829-1907), in full: ‘This man is not fit for duty but a very small portion of the time. He has done only little duty since joining the Regiment, and in my opinion ought not to have been enlisted'. He signs ‘J Brumback' at the conclusion, adding his rank ‘Lt. Col. 95th R. O. V. I. Comdg the Reg.' The document is next endorsed at Meridian, MS on July 6 by WILLIAM L. MCMILLEN (1829-1902), Union brigadier general who captured Confederate general Thomas Benton Smith and reportedly beat him so severely with his own sword that Smith spent the rest of his life in an asylum. He signs ‘W. L. McMillen' in black ink, with his rank added in another hand. The certificate is next endorsed as disapproved, before being endorsed and forwarded at Selma on July 13 by JOHN MCARTHUR (1826 – 1906), Union brigadier general and one of the ablest commanders in the western theater. Wounded at Shiloh, he led his brigade at Fort Donelson, Corinth, and Fort Blakely. He signs ‘J McArthur' in black ink, with his rank added in another hand. Shows folds, with some toning to the verso and small chips and holes at the top edge away from any endorsements, otherwise in very good condition overall.
