Good lot of five items signed by notable Union generals, includes: CHARLES H. MORGAN (1834-1875), Union brigadier general, commanded the artillery of the II Corps. After directing the corps batteries at Fredericksburg, he became Major General Winfield S. Hancock's chief of staff. Awarded five brevets, one for gallantry at Gettysburg. Signature ‘C H Morgan' in black ink on a 3.5 x 1.25 in. slip of paper cut from the conclusion of a letter, adding his rank ‘Lt Col Asst Insp Genl'. Shows a pencil inscription to the recto, with adhesive and archival tape residue to the verso, else very good. WITH: ROBERT B. MITCHELL (1823-1882), Union Brigadier General, badly wounded at Wilson's Creek but went on to lead a brigade at Fort Riley. Served as George H. Thomas' Chief of Cavalry, then removed before Chattanooga for court martial service in Washington, D.C. Bold signature ‘Robt B Mitchell' in black ink on a 5.5 x 2.5 in. slip of paper, adding his rank ‘Brig Genl Vols'. Ragged at the left edge, shows a pencil identifying inscription and archival tape residue on the verso, else very good. WITH: STEPHEN MILLER (1816-1881), Union brigadier general who advanced rapidly from private to colonel in the 1st Minnesota Infantry. In 1862 Miller returned from the South and replaced Brig. Gen. Henry Sibley as commander of Camp Lincoln. There, 303 Dakota Indian men, convicted of participating in the Dakota War of 1862, awaited their fate. Four months later, Miller supervised, by order of President Lincoln, the mass execution of 38 Dakotas condemned for their part in the war. Signature in black ink on a 1.25 x 4.25 in slip of paper, adding his rank ‘Brig Genl Vols'. Shows a pencil identifying inscription and archival tape residue on the verso, else very good. WITH: GREEN CLAY SMITH (1829-1895), Union brigadier general who helped rout John Hunt Morgan at Lebanon, Tennessee, resigned to join congress. Bold, full signature in black ink on a 5 x 2 in. slip of paper, adding his later position ‘Gov. of Montana'. Shows archival tape residue to the verso, else fine. WITH: JOHN S. PHELPS (1814–1886), Union colonel who led forces at Pea Ridge in Arkansas. President Lincoln appointed him as Military Governor of Arkansas in 1862 with the rank of brigadier general, but he resigned due to poor health. Bold signature in black ink on an irregular 7.5 x 3.25 in. slip of paper cut from an album page, adding ‘Springfield Mo'. Lightly toned at the edges, shows archival tape residue to the verso, else very good. SOLD WITH: GEORGE P. MORRIS (1802-1864), Prominent New York journalist, poet and editor, a general in the New York state militia. Signature ‘Geo. P. Morris' in black ink on a 4 x 1.25 in. slip of paper, adding ‘Yours very cordially'. Shows a pencil identifying inscription and archival tape residue on the verso, else very good. Six pieces.
