UNION GENERALS (5)
Good lot of five items signed by notable Union generals, includes: SAMUEL W. CRAWFORD (1829-1892), Union brigadier general who commanded a battery at Fort Sumter, and later led at Antietam, Gettysburg, and Five Forks. War-date signature ‘S. W. Crawford' in black ink on a 4.5 x 2.75 in. slip of paper cut from a sheet of ‘Headquarters 3d Div., 5th Corps' letterhead, dated Nov. 13, 1864 and adding his rank ‘Bvt Maj Genl Comdg 3rd Div 5 Corps'. Shows faint stains, else very good. Sold with a period frontispiece engraving of Crawford, suitable for framing. WITH: PATRICK E. CONNOR (1820-1891), Union brevet brigadier general and 'Indian fighter' who became a ‘hero' on the frontier after leading a massacre of Shoshoni on Bear River in 1863, killing nearly 300 men, women and children. Desperate for action, Connor and his battle-hungry men had hoped to go to Virginia for some real glory, but were denied a fight against the Confederacy. Instead, Connor was remanded to Fort Douglas to command the Salt Lake City area. After a supposed Shoshoni attack on miners, Connor marched his regiment 140 miles over the frozen winter landscape to wage a punitive battle against the Shoshoni encampment along the Bear River. Connor and his militia crossed the river and attacked the camp, then feigned a retreat only to encircle the camp and renew their attack. Connor later admitted that although he claimed to fight to prevent Indian raids along the mail routes, he used the opportunity to give his bored troops something to do and increase his own chances at military promotion. Signature ‘P. Edw Connor' in black ink on a 3.75 x 1.5 in. slip of paper, adding his rank ‘Brig. Genl. U. S. V. Comdg Dist. Of Utah'. Shows a pencil identifying inscription and archival tape residue on the verso, else very good. WITH: NEWTON M. CURTIS (1835-1910), Brigadier General who fought at Bull Run, awarded the Medal of Honor for leadership at Fort Fisher where he was wounded four times. Bold, full signature in black ink on a 5.25 x 2.25 in. slip of paper, adding a dedication to a doctor. Very good. WITH: THOMAS L. CRITTENDEN (1815 - 1893) Union major general promoted for his valor at Shiloh, , only to see his command later routed at Chickamauga. Signature ‘T L Crittenden' in black ink on a 3.5 x 2.25 in. card, adding his rank ‘Maj. Genl. U S Vols.' Shows adhesive residue on the recto, slightly affecting the rank, with mounting remnants to the verso, else very good. WITH: PHILIP S. CROOKE (1810-1881), U.S. representative and brigadier general of the New York National Guard, led his troops into Pennsylvania during the Confederate incursion of 1863 and manned the defense of Harrisburg. Bold signature in black ink on a 4 x 1 in. slip of paper, tabbed to a slightly larger backing. Very good. Five pieces.
