Description:

Good lot of three items signed by Union generals of the Civil War, includes: ISSAC F. QUINBY (1821-1891) Union brigadier general who led the first Federal regiment through pro-Confederate Baltimore, served at Yazoo Pass and Champion's Hill. A.L.S. "I. F. Quinby" as a U.S. Marshal, 1p. 4to., Rochester, Oct. 14, 1871, to attorney M.D. Phillips. Quinby rather testily questions recent requests for payment, in part: "Yours of this date notifying me that the County Committee had "assessed me $200 for party purposes' is received. I would ask on what basis or principle this assessment is made?...The notion seems to be very generally entertained that The U.S. Marshal's Office for this District is very lucrative. The slightest examination of the laws regulating the Marshal's Compensation will satisfy anyone that unless he disregards the oaths & obligations with which he is restrained by law, this notion of large compensation is founded on misconception..." He signs at the conclusion in black ink. Shows original mailing folds, with a typed identification at top left, else very good. WITH: JOHN A. RAWLINS (1831-1869) Union brigadier general and Grant's staff officer and principal advisor, he rose through the ranks to become Grant's Secretary of War. War-date manuscript signed note, 1p. 12mo., "Near Vicksburg", June 18, 1863, forwarding an enclosure (not present) to Maj. Gen. Stephen A. Hurlbut, "...By order of Maj. Gen. Grant". Rawlins signs in black ink at the conclusion. Shows small pencil inscriptions to recto and verso, else very good. WITH: MAHLON D. MANSON (1820-1895) Union brigadier general, wounded and captured at Richmond, Kentucky, badly wounded by a shell at Resaca and compelled to resign. Signature in black ink on a 3 1/4" x 1" slip of paper, showing some foxing and a pencil identifying inscription, else very good. Three pieces.
