Description:

ULYSSES S. GRANT
Fine partly-printed D.S. as President, 1p. folio on vellum, Washington, Jan. 8, 1875 appointing William H. Clapp as Captain in the 16th Regiment of Infantry. Boldly signed "U.S. Grant" at bottom right, with WILLIAM BELKNAP countersigning as Secretary of War and EDWARD TOWNSEND signing as Adjutant General. Belknap would be impeached by Congress a year later in a bribery scandal, while Clapp would go on to serve honorably in the 16th, retiring as a colonel. Minor central horizontal and vertical folds, none affecting Grant's excellent signature. Matted on fine canvas with gold-colored piping and presented in a 23" x 28" frame.
