Description:

ULYSSES S. GRANT
Fine content A.L.S. 3pp. 8vo., New York, Jan. 24, 1881, to Messrs. Peterson, Schanning, Herbert and Andrews, regarding political consideration of the Young Republicans organization, in part: "...The resolutions adopted by the 'Young Man's Central Club' of Kings Co. [Brooklyn, NY] on my acceptance of the invitation to preside at their meeting. Noticing the date - Feby. 9th - reminded me that it would be impossible to attend. I have been...much embarrassed by accepting two or more invitations for the same evening, but none of them have I felt more than this. On the 9th Mrs. Grant and I have a special engagement which I must keep especially since heretofore her engagements have had to give way to enable me to keep mine. Any day during the week except the 7th or 9th I would have had no other engagement...". Grant hopes that, "the Young Republicans of Kings Co. may hear such words of encouragement as to strengthen their convictions that their political views are right...until...there is entire freedom to think and vote as each one likes, with[no] fear of ostricism [sic]or other harm...". Kings County, New York is more generally known as Brooklyn, which was not incorporated into New York City until 1898. At the time of this letter it was strongly in the hands of the Democrats, hence Grant's concern about the treatment of young Republicans. It is not known what Mrs. Grant's engagement was, but her husband had just been all over the country stumping for presidential candidate James A. Garfield. All folds carefully reinforced with archival tape, mounting traces on verso affect nothing, overall very good condition.
