Description:

ULYSSES GRANT'S DOCTORS REPORT ON HIS CONDITION
Fine content A.D.S. written and signed by Grant's personal physician, GEORGE F. SHRADY (1830-1907), a surgeon who cared not only for Grant, but also consulted in the care of wounded President James Garfield and participated in the autopsy of assassin Charles Guiteau. The document, 1p. oblong, [Wilton, N.Y.], Apr. 2 [1885] is a report on Ulysses Grant's medical condition, in pencil. The report is also co-signed by Dr. J. H. DOUGLAS who also attended the dying president. Schrady reports: "...At the visit made by Drs. Barker, Shrady & Douglas...Genl. Grant's condition presented an improvement over that of yesterday...The pulse was steadier & fuller in volume. No change since the report of 12.10. The General remains most of the time in his chair, sleeping, easily aroused and waking with a clear mind. He takes nourishment as usual and is free from pain...". Near fine, sold with a 6 1/2" x 5" photo of Grant in his final days. In the fall of 1884, Grant was diagnosed with inoperable throat cancer. As time progressed and his condition worsened, he was constantly attended by his personal physician, George F. Shrady and throat specialist Dr. J. H. Douglas. Both Douglas and Shrady were at Grant's bedside when he passed on July 23, 1885.
