Description:

ANDREW JOHNSON
(1808-1875) Seventeenth President of the United States who came to office following the death of Abraham Lincoln. A squabble with Stanton along with his Reconstruction policies led to an impeachment by Congress. Rare A.L.S."Andrew Johnson" which has also been franked with his signature on the verso of the last page, 2pp. 4to., Greenville, Aug. 21, 1851 to Adam J. Glossbrener, Sergeant at Arms of the House of Representatives. Cryptic content, in part: "…You will remember about the close of the last session…I placed in your hands some documents and [?] for a certain purpose &c. Never hearing from you on them since, I concluded that the whole affair had slipped your memory or they had been misplaced...Perhaps…you accepted of them more out of respect to my feelings than any intention to make use of them…if so, I respect the motive, but must ask…to have them returned to me…It no doubt indicated vanity or weakness in me…to ask such a thing or even consent for such a thing of the kind to be done…Let this be as it may, it will not disturb the friendship…" Small tear affects one word of text on second page, with a loss of a 5" x 1" panel of paper likely also caused when the letter was opened, otherwise fine. At the time, Johnson was in the midst of a fierce election battle against anti-abolitionist Landon Carter Hayes. His request of Glossbrenner very possibly had something to do with Hayes, or at the very least exposure of his "request" may have proven very embarrassing to the future president. Johnson is very rare in holograph material!
