U.S.S. WABASH AND PORT ROYAL GROUPING
Grouping of letters pertaining to the naval career of Navy Paymaster Lucius B. Blydenburg, includes: SAMUEL F. DUPONT war-date L.S. 1p. 4to., "Flag Ship Wabash", Port Royal, Sep. 7, 1862 to Blydenburg detaching him from the vessel for transfer to New York; GIDEON WELLES war-date L.S., 1p. 4to., Navy dept., Washington, Sep. 17, 1862, returns a bond and order Blydenburg to report to Adm. DuPont; a secretarially-signed letter from DuPont to Blydenburg, 1p. legal folio, Port Royal, Aug. 19, 1862 detaching a man for drunkenness and recommending Blydenburg; a piece of Confederate patriotic stationery found by Blydenburg in a CSA quartermaster's office at Fort Beauregard on Nov. 8, 1861, signed by him; and an envelope franked by Navy Chief C. R. P. ROGERS. Two items are of special interest: a partial L.S. 4pp. 4to., from the USS Wabash at Port Royal, Nov. 10, 1861. The writer, clearly writing on behalf of Adm. Samuel F. Dupont (who likely signed this letter) commends several officers and men aboard the vessel for their gallantry in combat. In small part: "...Mr. Coghlam..skillfully served the rifled boat gun...The Engine and steam during the whole action was managed with consummate skill...3rd Assistant Engineer Missimer, who stood upon the bridge by my side, during the action, impressed me very favorably...skill and vigilance in keeping the ship clear of the shoals...The Marines were used as a reserve...rendered prompt assistance at the guns...good conduct which has always characterized their corps...Eight hundred and eighty shells were fired...". Finally is a copy of a note penned in a Confederate surgeon's journal left by the surgeon with wounded soldiers captured by the Union indicating that some had had arms blown away during the action. Many letters bear splits, folds and some soiling, condition just good.
