Description:

CAPT. EDWIN H. SPOFFORD GROUPING
A terrific grouping of material once owned by Capt. Edwin F. Spofford of the 6th and 19th Mass. Infantry, and the 1st Mass. Heavy Artillery with which he remained for most of the war. Spofford started his career as a musician, and rose through the ranks until he was severely wounded at Spotsylvania, where the regiment was devastated by a determined Confederate attack. Included in the archive is: two lead bullets, a minie ball and a small pistol, both of which impacted a soft substance, believed to have been removed from Spofford at the time of his wounding; two of Spofford's shoulder bars; his embroidered musician's hat badge, gold thread on a red background; an oval 7 1/2" x 9 1/2" hand-colored albumen photograph of Spofford showing him seated in uniform from the waist, up; a Veteran Association badge for the dedication of Boston's Army and Navy Monument (faded); an 1881 reunion ribbon; a G.A.R. pin and button; and Spofford's newspaper obituary. A great grouping! Obtained directly from the Spofford Family.
