Description:

U.S. NAVY PAYCHECKS ISSUED TO WOMEN (4)
An intriguing lot of four early U.S. Navy paychecks, each approx. 8 x 3 in., all issued by the U.S. Navy Yard in New York, and all unusually issued to women. The recipients include: Sarah Pride (check dated May 1, 1850); Ellen Markey (Dec. 1, 1855); Ann Barron (Nov. 1, 1850); and Bridget Barron (June 1, 1855). Pride and Markey each sign their checks in black in at lower right, while Ann Barron and Bridget Barron each sign with their ‘X' mark, with the issuing officer adding their names. Markey's check shows two approx 1 in. tears to the bottom edge, and all are ragged at the edges where detached from larger sheets, otherwise in very good condition overall. The relationship between these women and the U.S. Navy, and the nature of the work for which they were paid, is unknown; naval regulations prohibited the presence of women aboard U.S. Navy ships through the 1920's, although the Sisters of the Holy Cross served aboard the Navy's first hospital ship, USS RED ROVER, beginning in 1862, becoming the first officially-recognized women in that service.
