Description:

USS ONEIDA ENGINEER REPORTS A CREWMAN FOR INSUBORDINATION
An interesting sailor's letter, 1p. legal folio, June 9, 1867, written by Charles D. Southall, 3rd Assistant Engineer of the screw sloop USS ONEIDA while at sea. Southall drafts a report to his commander, Johnston B. Creighton, complaining of another crewman's insubordination. In full: ‘I would respectfully make the following report. John Boyle C. H. being late in reporting after being called on the morning watch, I spoke to him concerning it. He John Boyle told me that he did not care a God damn what I did with him, and if I did not like it, I could put some one else in the store-room, as he did not care a damn what I did. He did not report until twenty five (25) minutes after being called.' Shows original mailing folds, with a very small hole thereto at center, otherwise in very good to fine condition overall. USS Oneida had a very active tour of duty during the Civil War: she participated in Farragut's dash past Forts Jackson and St. Philip during the assault on New Orleans, destroying the Confederate gunboat CSS GOVERNOR MOORE. She later participated in Farragut's runs past Vicksburg. She later came under the command of Rear Admiral Samuel P. Lee and Commander George Preble, and was part of Farragut's squadron at Mobile Bay. In 1870, Oneida collided with the British steamer BOMBAY off Yokohama and sank with the loss of 125 men.
