Description:

Fine example of a U.S. Navy Mark 74, Mod. 1 telescopic gun sight, approx. 12 1/4" x 7" x 9 1/2", most commonly used in a set of three mounted to the 3-inch, 50-caliber dual-purpose gun, Marks 20-22. These guns were used widely aboard U.S. Navy warships and merchant vessels in the anti-aircraft and anti-ship roles, with the Mark 22 variant designed for specific use as a submarine deck gun. The sight presented here is manufactured from brass with a matte black finish, with an aiming eyepiece set at a 90-degree angle to the barrel and fitted with a red rubber hood and knurled focusing wheel. Knobs to adjust the view density and to cycle through a series of colored filters are fitted above the eyepiece, along with a maker's plaque giving the model number and indicating that it was manufactured by Honeywell in Minneapolis in 1943. The end of the objective lens, the barrel, and the control plate are serialized "233056-1" through "233058-1". The optics show a few spots of dust, but are otherwise notably crisp and clear. The objective lens and eyepiece are protected by their original metal caps, and the entire instrument is housed in its original fitted wood storage box. Shows some minor surface wear, with a split to the eyepiece cap, else very good.
