Description:

TRUMAN CAPOTE
(1924 - 1984) American author who pioneered the genre of the "nonfiction novel" with his influential work In Cold Blood. A superb and very rare item, Capote's textbook from his years at St. John's Military School Rabenort's Geography by William Rabenort (New York: American Book Company, 1966), hardbound, 8vo., no dustjacket. Signed on the first free endpaper: "Truman Capote St. John's Military School", with "Military School" crossed out and replaced by "bug house"! On the front cover he also added: "Puby Beamsburn Huttenttots", possibly a reference to the Khoikhoi people of Southwestern Africa. Capote attended St. John's when he moved to New York in 1933. It was there that his mother remarried Joseph Capote, who adopted Truman and named him Truman Garcia Capote. In his 1966 book A Christmas Memory, Capote angrily wrote of being sent away to military school: "those who Know Best decide that I belong in a military school. And so follows a miserable succession of bugle-blowing prisons, grim reveille-ridden summer camps...". Many say that it was during Capote's military education that he built the personal strength and coldness that allowed him to befriend - and ultimately betray - the murderers about whom he wrote in In Cold Blood. Light wear to cover as expected, light toning within, overall very good. A revealing piece.
