Description:

TRANSPORTING PRISONERS DURING THE WHISKEY REBELLION
A fascinating group of receipts for goods and services provided to militia troops transporting the few prisoners rounded-up in Pennsylvania during the Whiskey Rebellion, all 1p. approx. 8vo., from locations including York, Lancaster, Russell's Tavern, Wrights Ferry, White Horse, etc. between Oct. 20-29, 1794, most charging "Escort under Capt. Blanchard" and one mentioning the "First Troop of Philadelphia Light Horse", many also mentioning prisoners. All kinds of goods and services are described, including ferry tolls for 17 men and horses across the Susquehanna, meals (in one instance, only "bread & cheese for prisoners"), forage, liquor, etc. Two receipts are particularly interesting: one charges for firewood, sustenance and the jailor's "turn key fees", the other an invoice for a large quantity of cider, brandy and whiskey! On August 7, 1794, Washington invoked Martial Law to summon the militias of Pennsylvania, Virginia and several states. The rebel force they sought was likewise composed of Pennsylvanians, Virginians, and possibly men from other states. The militia force of 12,950 men was organized, roughly the size of the entire army in the Revolutionary War. Under the personal command of Washington, Hamilton and Revolutionary War hero General Henry "Lighthorse Harry" Lee, the army assembled in Harrisburg and marched into western Pennsylvania (to what is now Monongahela) in October of 1794. The rebels "could never be found," according to Jefferson, but the militia expended considerable effort rounding up a mere 20 prisoners, clearly demonstrating Federalist authority in the national government.
