THOMAS GAGE
(1721 - 1787) English general and colonial governor of Massachusetts, commander in chief in North America who used troops to seize military stores precipitating the Battle of Lexington and Battle of Bunker Hill, resigned 1775. Important A.LS. "Tho: Gage" as as commander in chief of the British North American forces, 1p. 4to., New York, Apr. 23, 1764 to Col. John Bradstreet, then about to embark for Fort Detroit which he planned to garrison in the wake of repeated attacks by hostile Indians led by Pontiac. In part: "...forward the inclosed for Major [Henry] Gladwin [commandant of Fort Detroit], by a safe Hand & with Dispatch. The rest of the Letters for the Posts may go at the same time...The Major will correspond with you, and give you every Information he can procure necessary for your success in your Operations, and give you every other Assistance in his Power...Mr. [John] Montressor [[1736-1799] British Engineer who became the Chief Engineer of America, ordered to construct a series of redoubts at the fort] I conclude has joined you who you will give orders to...Doctor Barr, and two Mates will compose your Hospital, the mate now at Detroit must be discharged..." Horizontal split repaired with archival tape on verso, else very good.
