Description:
ROSE HARTWICK THORPE (1850-1939) American poet and suffrage worker, greatly influenced by Longfellow and Lydia Sigourney. Her poem "The Curfew Must Not Ring Tonight" was appreciated locally until 1870, when it was sent to a Detroit newspaper. The success was immediate and overwhelming - although of no financial gain to Thorpe, who died nearly penniless. Scarce A.Q.S. 6pp. 4to., San Antonio, Dec. 6, 1886, the complete text of her famous poem "The Curfew Must Not Ring Tonight ", signed in full at conclusion. Some light soiling, pinholes at top margin, else very good. $300-400
