NOAH WEBSTER (1758-1843) American lexicographer and author; compiled the first American dictionary. Very scarce A.L.S. "Noah Webster " 2pp. 4to, New York, May 31, 1788, to unidentified Gentlemen as Editor of The American Magazine, in part: "...The Campbells have paid the account, on this condition - my giving my word that the 8 plates shall be sent them for which they will give two thirds of a dollar...".In a postscript, he adds: "I have done the best I could & hope my conduct will meet with your approbation...I hope I shall not be disappointed of the paper...". Light toning to margins, otherwise very good. $1,500-2,000
