THOMAS N. WAUL
(1813 -1908) Confederate brigadier general who surrendered to Union forces at Vicksburg, he later commanded a brigade under Walker in the Red River campaign.Superb contanet A.L.S., 2pp. 4to., Nyland, Texas, Jan. 31, 1898 to Dr. Jno. O. Scott. Waul recollects events at the battle of Jenkins Ferry on April 30, 1864, during Steele's disastrous Camden Expedition. He writes, in part: "...General [Sterling] Price was unable to advance or hold his position...I was ordered to the front by Genl. [E. Kirby] Smith to occupy and drive the enemy. In our advance we met and passed through General Price's command, then in full retreat...[we] met and drove the enemy fromt their intrenchments, and were stopped by General Smith who appeared in person and thought...a farther advance might be too hazardous...until a reconnaisance was made. Scurry and Randall's Brigades were on my right...under the conmmand of General Walker...we won a decided victory, and the enemy...crossed the river that evening and night in disorderly and rapid retreat. Without artillery or cavalry the Confederates depended upon muskets and bayonets, and the conflict was a fair test of the courage and endurance of our troops...".
