Description:

JOHN A. WASHINGTON
War-date A.L.S. of Confederate Col. John Augustine Washington, III (1821-1861), the son of Bushrod Washington and therefore the great grand-nephew of George Washington. Washington was aide-de-camp to Robert E. Lee in the campaign of Western Virginia. While reconnoitering in the Cheat Mountains he was shot by a bushwacker and killed on Sept. 13, 1861. Washington pens a letter, 2pp. 4to., Richmond, Jan. 29, 1861 to Ned in ink on lined letterhead, in small part: "...I got here safely on Thursday, & found a telegram from Mr. Goldsborough telling me that my negro boy Andrew had been sent to the Junction & would be sent up the road...that evening. Will you please direct Lunsford as soon as he has done harvest to take Andrew over to [?] & forward him to the care of Hector Davis for me by railroad...I found a friend here (Lieut. Willie Myers) returning to Jamestown & sent Beverly's package by him. Today I went to Mr. Macfarland. He tells me that I am mistaken about the transfer of funds to the Mother [?] Bank...A check of Gen'l. Lee's on the latter was cashed here (it may have been a personal favour)...Nothing of any importance, some little skirmishing with marauding parties...Those are some fellows who have been daring the enemy to land and firing at the ships out in the channel with their muskets, frolicking & visiting the girls, and running off when the Yankees landed, leaving Dr. ? and Mr. Grimes' houses to be destroyed, robbed & burned....I enclose you Capt. Adams order for my horses......". Washington continues with thoughts on organizing the commissary, concluding: "The Gen'l. [Lee] and [Lee's son] Custis are well...".
