Description:

THOMAS JEFFERSON (1743 - 1826) Third President of the United States, author and signer of the Declaration of Independence, ceased the importation of slaves to America. Partly-printed D.S. as President, 1p. folio parchment, Washington, Apr. 5, 1808, a grant of 992 acres of land in in Northwest Territory (Ohio) to Capt. of Cavalry 'Ferdinand Oneal [sic: O'Neal]. Counter-signed by Secretary of State and future president, JAMES MADISON. On the verso, the document bears a signed endorsement by Secretary of War HENRY DEARBORN (1751-1829) indicating that the grant was appropriate. Dearborn fought at Bunker Hill, in Arnold's Quebec expedition, at Wyoming Valley, and in the War of 1812 took Fort George and York with heavy losses. Engrossment and Jefferson's signature were accomplished with very fine-nibbed pens and the signature has lightened a bit but remains entirely legible, while Madison's signature remains bold and distinct. Evenly toned, folds and some light foxing and a stain in blank area, overall very good. Research shows Ferdinand O'Neal enlisted as a Dragoon in Bland's Regiment when it was first raised in Virginia and he continued in that regiment until he was appointed an officer in Lee's Corps in 1778. He served with that corps until the end of the war at which time he had attained the rank of captain.
