Description:

(1743 - 1826) Third President of the United States, author and signer of the Declaration of Independence, ceased the importation of slaves to America. Fine association D.S. 'Th: Jefferson' on the verso of a sight draft made payable to him, 7 x 3 in., Lynchburg, Va., Sep. 24, 1824, in which THOMAS RANDOLPH (1768-1828) promises payment of the huge sum of $5,000 from the Farmers Bank of Virginia within sixty days. Wrinkled a bit, very light show-through, else very good to fine. Thomas Randolph, Jr. was an American planter, soldier, and politician from Virginia. He served as a member of both houses of the Virginia General Assembly, a Representative in the U.S. Congress, and as the 21st Governor of Virginia, from 1819–1822. He married Martha Jefferson, the oldest daughter of Thomas Jefferson. At this stage in his life, Randolph was drinking excessively and heavily in debt. The next year, he would lose Edgehill, the family plantation, and would grow embittered with Jefferson, his children and his own wife for saving Monticello at the cost of his own estate. In the end, he reconciled, and would die and be buried at Monticello. This loan undoubtedly went unpaid...
