Description:

THOMAS CHITTENDEN
(1730 - 1797) First Governor of Vermont and a member of the convention which declared Vermont to be an independent state. Partly printed D.S. as "Captain-General, Governor, and Commander in Chief, in and over the state of VERMONT", 1p., oblong folio, Rutland, Oct. 13, 1794. Chittenden issues an appointment to a group of over 20 names as justices of the peace for Addison County. Countersigned by TRUMAN SQUIRE, Chittenden's secretary, and bearing a paper seal. Chittenden allied closely with Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain boys during Vermont's sometimes tumultuous pre-Union years. Light toning with minor foxing and fraying at the edges, else very good.
