THEODORE ROOSEVELT
(1858 - 1919) Twenty-sixth President of the United States who started the Panama Canal, settled the Russo-Japanese War, broke up Standard Oil and encouraged conservation. A fine pair of items, includes a T.L.S. "Theodore Roosevelt" as Vice President on official letterhead, 1p. 4to., Oyster Bay, June 18, 1901 to Second Lt. Ode C. Nichols, 34th Inf'y, U.S. Vols. in Manila. In part: "...I am in receipt of yours of May 6th with enclosures. Those are letters of which you can be justly proud, and I am extremely proud myself at the way in which you, a representative of my old regiment, have risen in the Philippines. I shall at once forward them to the War Department and will see what I can accomplish. My own view is very strongly that with such testimonials of your capacity as shown by actual work in the field...". Folds, else very good. Matted with an original photograph, 11 1/2" x 8 1/2" b/w, showing Roosevelt full-length and in profile astride his horse, possibly in Rough Rider uniform, with another rider beside him. The photo bears an ink caption: "Colonel Theodore Roosevelt and 1st Lieutenant Jack Greenway (Rough Riders) taken at Montauk Point Long Island New York 1898". Photo bears some spotting and soiling, else very good. Both pieces are set into a gray mat and inlaid wood frame. Illinois native Nichols eventually achieved the rank of colonel.
