Description:

THEODORE ROOSEVELT
(1858 - 1919) Twenty-sixth President of the United States who started the Panama Canal, settled the Russo-Japanese War, broke up Standard Oil and encouraged conservation. Fine content T.L.S. on his Oyster Bay letterhead, 1p. oblong 8vo., Dec. 21, 1915 to C. W. Burkett, an editor. Roosevelt exhibits his thoroughly pro-war attitude: "...is is not possible for me to go into details at this time. I have to confine myself to the fight to create a sentiment in favor of the general proposition. To my mind the only democratic solution of the problem of preparedness is universal military training...". Fine condition. The previous May, the Lusitania had been sunk by a German submarine costing 128 American lives. Roosevelt was at the forefront of those promoting swift military action against the aggressors.
