Description:

(1887 - 1944) American general and son of the president, served with distinction in World Wars I & II, died shortly after leading his men ashore at Utah Beach and awarded the Medal of Honor. Fine content T.L.S. on his personal letterhead, 1p. 4to., Oyster Bay, Nov. 7, 1924 to a friend. Three days after a crushing loss to Alfred E. Smith in the Gubernatorial election, Roosevelt writes, in part: "...It is the support of people such as you that has made the defeat worth while...my fight helped the Republican ticket in general...There is a line from an old poem that runs 'Though I am wounded, I am not slain, I will lay me down and bleed awhile, And then arise and fight again'..." Lightly toned, with a repaired 2" vertical tear at bottom blank margin affecting nothing, overall very good. In the New York state election, of 1924, Roosevelt was the Republican nominee for Governor of New York. His cousin Franklin Delano Roosevelt spoke out on Ted's "wretched record" as Assistant Secretary of the Navy during the Teapot Dome oil scandals, and Eleanor Roosevelt was particularly active in embarrassing Theodore at every opportunity. Theodore lost the election to Alfred E. Smith by 105,000, and young T.R. never forgave the Hyde Park Roosevelts.
