Description:

THEODORE ROOSEVELT
Unusual partly-printed D.S. as President, 1p. oblong folio, Washington, Dec. 20, 1904 being an appointment of Abraham J. Miller as a "...First Lieutenant in the Porto [sic] Rico Provisional Regiment of Infantry...". Countersigned by future president WILLIAM H. TAFT as Secretary of War. The all-volunteer regiment was first established in 1901 and consisted of both Anglo and native Puerto Ricans nicknamed "The Borinqueneers" and officially known as the 65th Infantry Regiment. The regiment saw action in the World Wars and enjoyed the distinction of having fired the first American shots in World War I when it opened on a German supply ship that attempted to force its way out of San Juan Bay to deliver supplies to German U Boats in 1915. During World War II, the regiment fought in North Africa and France and during the Korean War, a dispute between Puerto Rican soldiers and Anglo officers regrettably resulted in the largest mass court martial in U.S. Army history. Light toning, else fine condition.
