Description:

THEODORE ROOSEVELT
(1858 - 1919) Twenty-sixth President of the United States who started the Panama Canal, settled the Russo-Japanese War, broke up Standard Oil and encouraged conservation. Partly-printed D.S. 1p. folio, Washington, Mov. 9, 1900. An appointment of William Buel Franklin as "Commander First Battalion Naval Militia, New York", co-signed by EDWARD W. HOFFMAN as Adjutant General. Franklin is undoubtedly the son of William Buel Franklin (1823-1903) major general in the Civil War who rose in the ranks to corps commander of the Army of the Potomac and later became a noted politician. Along with two related partly-printed D.S., the first a Navy Department commission, 1p. folio, Washington, Sept. 11, 1917, elevating Franklin to the position of a Commander, signed by Secretary of the Navy JOSEPHUS DANIELS. The second is another partly-printed D.S. 1p. 4to., Washington, July 30, 1929, promoting Franklin as Lieutenant Commander, signed by CHARLES F. ADAMSas Secretary of the Navy. The Roosevelt appointment is in poor condition, bearing severe wrinkling and toning to edges, with loss at top right corner and fading to Roosevelt's signature as a result. Should be viewed and estimated accordingly. Three pieces.
