Description:

THEODORE HERZL
(1860 - 1904) Hungarian Jew, founder of modern Zionism. Sent to Paris as a correspondent, he reported on the Dreyfus affair and was soon appalled by the vicious anti-Semitism he observed. Herzl decided that Jewish assimilation in Europe was impossible and that the only solution to the Jewish problem was the establishment of a Jewish national state, and organized the first Zionist World Congress, serving as its president. Fine content T.L.S. 1p. 4to., Vienna, Dec. 30, 1900, in German to a colleague on "the action committee", concerning a previously-sent circular from "...the syndicate for industrial enterprises in Palestine...both in Zionist and also in new Zionism, but relying...on the idea to publicize...knowledge of it. We are up to today's with the new knowledge under these circulars...we take the liberty again in memory of the call [?]...". Herzl had first visited Jerusalem in 1898 concomitant with a visit by Kaiser Wilhelm II, where he secured the recognition of Zionism. Three months before this letter, on Aug. 13, 1900 the Fourth Zionist Convention convened in London. Torn file holes at left, otherwise very good.
