Description:

THEODOR SCHERER
(1889-1951) Wermacht divisional commander, German hero of the Battle of Cholm, for which Scherer received the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. Rare S.P., "Scherer Gen. Lt.", 3 1/2" x 5 1/2", b/w, a Hoffman postcard-style photograph of a bearded Scherer striking a profile pose. In 1942, Scherer commanded a small group of German soldiers in a brilliant defense of Cholm [Poland] against a far superior Russian force, who launched over 2,000 attacks against the garrison in 107 days. Hitler not only personally awarded Scherer his Knight's Cross, he authorized the "Cholm Shield" to commemorate the defense. Scherer's image, taken from a Hitler Youth autograph album, is boldly signed in black ink to the bottom left; fine condition.
