Description:

"THE WASHINGTON AFRO AMERICAN"
Excellent copy of the Dec. 7, 1948 edition of the "Washington Afro American", the Washington, D.C. edition of the longest running family-owned black newspaper in the United States, 20pp. folio.. The paper features a wide array of articles of interest to their black readership, often presented in a sensational manner. These include reports on the trial of two white men accused of lynching a man in Georgia, several items regarding desegregation in veteran's housing, and a political cartoon depicting racial bias in Alabama courts. The front page of the sports section features a photograph of baseball players Jackie Robinson and Roy Campanella signing baseballs. Disbound from a compilation, lightly toned throughout, with minor chips to the edges, else very good. The "Afro American" was founded in Baltimore in 1892 by John H. Murphy, a former slave and Civil War soldier. It once boasted editions in thirteen cities, and continues to be published in Baltimore and Washington, D.C. to this day.
