Description:

"HERALD OF FREEDOM" ABOLITIONIST NEWSPAPER
An excellent, early abolitionist newspaper, 4pp. folio, the July 12, 1844 edition of the "Herald of Freedom", the journal of the New Hampshire Anti-Slavery Society, published in Concord. The paper contains a number of interesting reports, most notably an announcement of the murder of Joseph Smith, founder of the Mormon faith, and his brother at Carthage, Illinois. The paper also reports on the rising tide of abolitionism in New Hampshire and in the United States as a whole, including a letter to the editor, N.P. Rogers, describing the increasing use of the slogan "No Union With Slaveholders", and describing its implications. The masthead of the paper features the slogan: "I enter into no compromise with slavery. I am for justice, in the name of Humanity, and according to the Law of the Living God." The paper bears its original folds, with moderate foxing throughout, and has been disbound from a compilation, else very good. The New Hampshire Anti-Slavery Society was founded by Stephen Symonds, a radical abolitionist well known for his dramatic and aggressive style of public speaking. He was well-known for interrupting church services to denounce the congregation for not taking a hard line against slavery.
