Description:

THE TOMBSTONE EPITAPH
An early and rare edition of the Tombstone Epitaph for Thursday Aug. 4, 1881. Published only two years after the founding of the town in 1879, and only two months before the historic shootout, the paper is filled with advertisements for all manner of goods and services as well as news items and an editorial decrying miners only after quick profit: "...When men cease to struggle to become mine millionaires in a month or a year, and will accept and work mines legitimately for a reasonable profit, as is evidently the method pursued by the mangers of Indian Queen, the dividends from Arizona may become millions monthly, where now they are but a few hundred thousands. There are numerous mines in and around Tombstone that can be put upon a moderate paying basis if the managers would be content with small profits instead of sinking all in the greater endeavor to amass a fortune in a few months or a year...". The name of Virgil Earp does appear at least once in this issue, on page four, in the minutes of the meeting of the Tombstone Hook and Ladder Company. Tombstone was a violent town and in this issue we find, also on page four, the story of a murder in nearby Deming where "... a cow-boy named Andy Price while on a drunken spree shot and instantly killed a man named McKrea, who had been drinking with him, who was at the time sitting opposite him at dinner in a restaurant... he was overhauled by one of our efficient deputies Doc Gilpin, who took him in... he will be taken to Silver City today along with a Chinaman who stole thirteen hundred dollars from the Pioneer store...." Much more good content. Toned chipped and torn at edges, pages detached, weak folds reinforced and paper de-acidified, overall very good.
