Description:

THE TOMBSTONE EPITAPH
A rare copy of The Tombstone Epitaph for Sunday, Dec. 5, 1880, less than one year after its creation, 4pp. lg. folio, containing within news of the city and numerous advertisements. The first page reveals news from the mining camp at Bisbee, while the second and third pages reports on the jailing of 14 men at Cork for "firing on the police", the bright mining prospects at Tombstone, construction of mines, and: "Marshal Sippy made many first friends yesterday by his prompt and efficient action by checking the Clark-Gray gang. He demonstrated the fact that is in sympathy with law and order and that he is not afraid to assume a little authority in a case of emergency...". Further news regards Ferguson's ranch, and a shot "...in either the shaft of Bilicke's or Dolan's mines, on Allen street, hurled a piece of rock weighing about 4 pounds [sic] a distance of four or five hundred feet, coming down through the dirt and asphaltum roof of the Headquarters Saloon. The rock can be seen at the EPITAPH office. With such missiles flying around the principal street of the camp, it behooves the people to bomb-proof their houses and heads...". Finally, the final page reports on an attempt to move a judge's house! It turns out this is the same Clark and Gray band mentioned on p. 2. Pages detached, moderate toning and wear to edges and a couple of tape repairs thereon, still very good.
