Description:

THE INSPIRATION FOR SHERLOCK HOLMES!
JOSEPH BELL (1837-1911) Scottish surgeon considered the "Father of Forensic Pathology". Bell emphasized the importance of close observation in making a diagnosis. To illustrate this, he would often pick a stranger and, by observing him, deduce his occupation and recent activities. Arthur Conan Doyle met Bell in 1877, and served as his clerk at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. When Doyle later wrote the Holmes series, he stated that his detective was loosely based on Bell. Rare A.L.S. 1p. 8vo. on official letterhead, Edinburgh, June 16, 1880 (while Doyle was still under his tutelage), advising that a certificate sent to him would not exempt its holder from a chemistry examination. Mounting traces on verso, else near fine.
