Description:

THE DEATH OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN
A fine and rare newspaper account of the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, as reported in the black-bordered New York Herald Tribune issue of Apr. 16, 1865, 8pp. folio. The first column is filled with headlines: "OUR LOSS...The Great National Calamity...DEATH OF THE PRESIDENT...Sad Details of the Terrible Event...The Last Moments of the President...SCENE AT THE DEATH BED...IDENTIFICATION OF THE MURDERER...John Wilkes Booth the Assassin...THE GRIEF OF THE NATION...". The first three items printed dispatches from Sec. of War Edwin M. Stanton reporting on the failing condition and death of Lincoln, multiple reports on Lincoln's last day, the shooting, Lincoln's slow death and a minute-by-minute account of his last moments, and a report on the search for Booth. Reactions in various cities are noted, and the texts of mourning speeches offered by various generals and politicians are heavily excerpted. This well-known paper bears a very small hole at fold junctures on front page, repaired with archival tape on verso, with some foxing and light marginal wear, remaining entirely presentable and well suited for display.
