Description:

CONFEDERATE NEWSPAPER'S ACCOUNT OF LINCOLN'S RE-NOMINATION
A folio sheet from the Confederate newspaper Daily Dispatch, Richmond, June 14, 1864, with two columns devoted to the Baltimore Convention during which Lincoln was re-nominated as President, with "Andy" Jackson as vice-President. The story is essentially a summarization of the story from the New York Herald, and gives the dialogue during the proceedings which were characterized as having "some disorder". In very small part: "...After further debate...the Convention then proceeded to ballot for President...[states and numbers listed]The new platform upon which Mssrs Lincoln and Johnson are nominated, we must say is a stunner. The first resolution...demands the suppression of the rebellion by force of arms...The second...declares, declares against any compromise with armed rebels except upon the condition precedent of their unconditional surrender...The third insists that slavery be utterly extirpated from the soil of the United States", and adds: "Why Hannibal Hamlin was set aside, and why Andrew Johnson of all men regarded as the man for the Vice President, we do not pretend to know, Johnson having been down to the rebellion, a regular dyed in the wool Southern Democrat. It may have been supposed that his name would give strength to Old Abe among the old line War Democracy, and contribute at the same time to encourage the leading politicians of the rebellious States to abandon the unprofitable drudgery of Jeff Davis and come over into the remunerative service of Abraham Lincoln....". Much more reporting, with sections regarding: "Why Grant did not get the nomination", a "Yankee account of Sherman's repulse on the 27th", and so on. Very good condition.
