Description:

THE ANTI-HORSE THIEF ASSOCIATION
An unusual pair of printed ephemera, including a pamphlet Constitution of the State Grand Orders of the Anti-Horse Thief Association 12p. 12mo. [Kansas, n.y.], stitch bound in titled wraps. Offered with a printed postcard addressed to a Kansas resident, Altamont, Ks., July 7, 1887 headlined "STOLEN! and noting the theft of an eight-year-old bright bay horse and describing the thief as "a man about thirty-four years old, 5 feet, ten or eleven inches height, heavy black moustache and chin whiskers...wore a black suit of cloth clothes somewhat worn, and a light straw hat...". The Anti-Horse Thief Association was established in Missouri in 1863 to resist the rampant pillaging committed by Union and Confederate guerillas in the region. Owing to the continuing lawlessness following the war in the West, the association grew into neighboring states. Some chapters lasted well into the twentieth century. Light soiling and marginal wear, else fine condition.
