Description:

THE 1863 RECORD BOOK OF CAPT. JOHN H. MABRY, CO. B, 48TH N.C. INFANTRY
An incredible, detail-filled notebook maintained by Capt. JOHN H MABRY who commanded Co. B of the 48th N.C. Infantry covering the years 1862-63 and including the battles of Fredericksburg and Antietam. Mabry had enlisted on Feb. 26, 1862 and by October of the same year had risen to the rank of captain. This record book is about the same size as the common pocket diary carried by many soldiers, and contains about 200pp., about half of which are filled with Mabry''s neatly-penned entries covering every detail of the disposition of the men under his command. The book opens with Mabry''s signature, rank, and the year of the record, "1863". There follows a veritable mountain of information about the company and every man within: a list of all officers, non-coms and soldiers, adding their occupations, dates and places of enlistment, physical details, and date and cause of death; "Leave Indulgences" issued, furloughs and furlough extensions, conscripts and substitutes, with similar details; a list of battles in which each man in the regiment participated, and if they were wounded (including the 1862 battles at French''s Farm, Harper''s Ferry, Sharpsburg, Fredericksburg, and Bristow Station in 1863) ; those missing from battles; the 63 men killed or died during the year listed by name, with date; deserters, and miscellaneous expenditures. All entries are easily legible. Simply an amazing record of the service of a single company of Confederates in some of the war''s sharpest conflicts.
